Number of Squares on a Chessboard

here is one really interesting puzzle what is the number of Squares on a Chessboard?
The first thing is why the answer is not just 64...

All the red squares in the above picture would count as valid squares, so we are asking how many squares of any dimension from 1x1 to 8x8 there are on a chess board.

The key is to think how many positions there are that each size of square can be located...

A 2x2 square, for example, can be located in 7 loactions horizontally and 7 locations vertically. ie in 49 different positions. Consider the table below...
sizehorizontal positionsvertical positionspositons
1x18864
2x27749
3x36636
4x45525
5x54416
6x6339
7x7224
8x8111
total204

In total there are 204 positions. this is the sum of the number of possible positions for all the different sized squares.

Formula For n x n Chessboard?

It's clear from the analysis above that the solution in the case of n x n is the sum of the squares from n2 to 12that is to say n2 + (n-1)2 + (n-2)2 ... ... 22 + 12

Mathematically that is written as follows:
sum of the squares of the first n natural numbers sigma notation
The proof of the explicit solution is beyond the scope of this site, but if you want to look it up a mathematician would refer to it as 'the sum of the squares of the first n natural numbers.' The final answer is given by

n3/3 + n2/2 + n/6

Akhilesh Yadav launches unemployment allowance scheme by distributing cheques

Fulfilling his election campaign promise to give doles to jobless youth, Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav along with his father Samajwadi Party supremoMulayam Singh Yadav distributed cheques to more than 10,000 unemployed youth on Sunday.

Addressing a large gathering of beneficiaries and party workers, Akhilesh Yadav said that with the start of the scheme he has fulfilled one more election promise. He said that all promises made in the election manifesto would be fulfilled by his government.

The unemployment allowance which was started during the previous Mulayam Singh Yadav regime was discontinued by the subsequent Chief MinisterMayawati who came to power in 2007. However, the promise to restore the scheme was seen as crucial in galvanizing youths towards the Samajwadi Party which romped home with a handsome majority in the assembly elections earlier this year.

The scheme would provide Rs 1,000 to each unemployed youth aged between 25 to 40 years and whose family income is less than Rs 36,000 per annum. To eliminate any discrepancies, the allowance would be credited to the bank account of eligible youth.

Speaking on the occasion, Akhilesh Yadav said that the fact that his government has started the unemployment allowance scheme before completing its six months in power shows their commitment to fulfill all promises made in the election manifesto.

He said that the government is speeding up industrialization and bringing fresh investments to the state so that more jobs are created but will distribute the doles till the time the youth find jobs for themselves.

He said that the government soon start distributing laptops and tablets to school passouts as part of its other big election manifesto promise.

SP supremo Mulayam Singh Yadav said that the SP government would not letdown people who voted them to power and the start of the unemployment allowance scheme was one step towards meeting expectations.

He said that the demand for unemployment allowance was first raised by late socialist thinker Ram Manohar Lohia and their government would keep working for poor minorities and backward sections of the society.

Large number of ministers and bureaucrats were present the venue where the unemployment allowance cheques were distributed. However, senior minister and party's prominent Muslim face, Azam Khan who has reportedly not been pulling along well with the Chief Minister was missing. He left for Rampur on Saturday to address a press conference though being invited for the function.
